Follow-up Visit After Mental Illness Hospital Stay

What was measured?

What percentage of HMO members who have been hospitalized for a mental illness were seen by a mental health provider within 30 days after leaving the hospital?

These results are based on a sample of HMO patient administrative records.

Why is it important?

Often, mentally ill patients do not continue the right treatment. Follow-up visits with those patients who had a recent hospital stay should be used to check that the patient is continuing with the right treatment including that the right medicine is being used correctly.

Look for differences of at least four percentage points.

Smaller differences are often not significant.
