Black Infant Health (BIH) provides services to pregnant African-American women, and to African American infants. The goal of the program is to ensure that African American babies are born healthy, and have the opportunity to grow into healthy children.

About Black Infant Health


BIH serves African-American women who are pregnant or have babies up to age two. The County's BIH contractor, Family Health Centers of San Diego, provides direct BIH services in specific zip codes in San Diego County. The following services are to improve the health and well being of "at risk" African-American women, infants, children, families and the community:

  • Home visitation for one-on-one support
  • Free parenting classes
  • Help with Medi-Cal, Access for Infants and Mothers (AIM), and Healthy Families applications
  • Help finding prenatal and well child care
  • Referrals for emergency food, clothing and housing
  • Advocacy for clients
  • Referrals to Public Health Nursing and other services for pregnant women
  • Social support

There is NO charge for BIH program services.

  • San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) provides families with rental assistance and a variety of other affordable housing programs.
  • Childcare San Diego helps families who fill out an application to get on a waiting list to receive help paying for childcare.
  • If you would like to join the program or would like more information, please contact the BIH program. BIH representatives are happy to speak to community groups who are interested in learning about BIH or good health for African-American families.
