Family Day in the Park is community effort promoting safe and healthy families. When stressors are high and resources are few, families came and spent a day together, laughing and playing together, creating positive interactions and strengthening their relationships. The event hosted activities for children ages birth - 12 years old and provided resources and information for parents and caregivers to help them through these challenging economic times.

The Commission on Children, Youth and Families partnered with over 60 local non-profit agencies and local business with the goal of increasing awareness of resources that can help San Diego families. Participants were able to enjoy carnival style games and activities such as face paining and craft making at each of the 60 booths. This provided an educational event that was fun and entertaining for both children and their parents.

On the main stage, there were variety of local entertainers targeted at children under age 12 years. There were acts every 30 – 45 min beginning at 10:00 am and lasting until 2:30pm. The acts include karate demonstrations and dance performances.

2009 STARS AWARD Breakfast

In recognition of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Commission on Children Youth and Families hosted its 5th Annual 2009 STARS Awards.

The event, which was held on April 29th at the Hyatt Mission Bay Resort, began at 8:00am and honored local community, non-profit and business leaders that have demonstrated their commitment to preventing child abuse in our community.

The Commission on Children, Youth and Families partnered with the United Way of San Diego and the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation for this community event. This year’s theme; Safe Children and Healthy Families are a Shared Responsibility reminds us that it takes an entire community to solve the problem and that everyone can be a part of the solution.

There were over 200 attendees at the event, including community leaders, and professionals working in the fields of child welfare, education, juvenile justice, public health, domestic violence prevention, and law enforcement.

This was a time to come together to recognize the issue of child abuse and what we can do as a community to ensure we have safe and healthy children and families free from abuse.
