A new, automated system posts details of newsworthy death investigations online, announced the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“This new system is a win for all parties,” said Dr. Glenn Wagner, Chief Medical Examiner.

“The public will benefit from being provided with more information, and potentially quicker than before...The media will benefit by receiving information sooner, and in more detail than before...and my investigators will save time with the streamlined system to release information, and by a significantly decreased volume of incoming media calls,” Wagner said.

The posting of news releases will occur as soon as investigators finish their preliminary reports.

Typically the initial postings will not include information about the cause and manner of death, or the contributing conditions. The name of the decedent may be withheld if investigators have not yet identified the person or notified the next-of-kin. Subsequent postings will update those items not initially posted as soon as they become available. The Web page will be updated every 15 minutes.

Information other than what is listed in the press release format will be released only after the case is closed.
