The La Mesa Branch of the San Diego County Library will close its doors at 8055 University Avenue on Sunday, June 8, at 5 p.m., to prepare for the opening of a new facility at 8074 Allison Avenue on Monday, June 16, 9:30 a.m. The library’s phone number will remain the same, (619) 469-2151. The new site is part of the City of La Mesa’s reconstruction of its Civic Center.
“We are delighted and excited about this expansion of library services at our La Mesa Branch Library,” said County Library director José Aponte. “This library and staff are a jewel in the County Library’s complement of library services and infrastructure.”
During the temporary closure, the book return bins will remain open at the former site. Due dates of checked out materials have been extended to July 1. The Library’s bookmobile will visit the library parking lot Wednesday, June 11, from 1 to 5 p.m.
Other County Library branches in the general area are Casa de Oro, El Cajon, Lemon Grove, Rancho San Diego and Spring Valley. Books checked out at La Mesa may be returned to the mobile library or any of the County Library’s 33 branches, or to any public library in San Diego County.
The new facility, constructed by the City of La Mesa, will house the library and post office. At 10, 000 square feet, the library will be 2,100 square feet larger than the current building.
The County of San Diego will continue to operate the branch library. Hours will remain the same (Monday – Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Sunday, 1 – 5 p.m.).
New services at the library will include wireless Internet access, express self-checkout machines, computer stations dedicated to educational games for children, and a Friends of the La Mesa Library bookstore.
All scheduled events and services will continue in the new library, including the planned Summer Reading Programs for children, teens and adults.
