The County Farm and Home Advisor’s Office and the University of California are kicking off Wildfire Awareness Week, May 5-9 by unveiling the Wildfire Zone kiosk at the County Administration Center located at 1600 Pacific Highway throughout the entire month of May.

“The high-tech kiosk is a one-of-a-kind touch screen that allows you to select both indoor and outdoor areas of your home to show what zones might be vulnerable to a wildfire,” said Valerie Mellano, Director of the County’s Home and Farm Advisor’s Office/UC Cooperative Extension. “In addition, there are tips about what to do before, during and after a fire. One impressive feature is that the kiosk prints out whatever information you select to take with you.”

KioskThe wildfire kiosks will eventually be rolled out to various County offices and private businesses. Wildfire brochures, tip cards, videos and training workshops are also available.

The County has many codes and ordinances related to wildfire. The Wildfire Zone campaign was designed to educate residents about how to protect their families and property from wildfire and to make the information more user-friendly by adding a new, interactive Web site and the high-tech kiosks. The collaborative program involves the County’s Cooperative Extension; University Cooperative Extension programs throughout the western states; government agencies; fire authorities; and community organizations.

Training workshops to discuss the new state building codes and high-fire hazard areas are scheduled for May 12 in El Cajon, and on May 13 in Escondido.
