January 27, 2009

County Supervisors have begun the appointment process for a new Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk at the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, January 27.

Greg Smith retired from the job on December 31, 2008, after serving as Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk for 25 years. The Assistant Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk, Mr. David Butler, is currently in charge of the office.

The job is an elected post, but since Mr. Smith retired before his term would have ended in January 2011, the Board of Supervisors must follow a specific appointment process outlined in County Board policy.

The County will accept applications from Wednesday, January 28 at 8 a.m. through Wednesday, February 18 at 5 p.m.

All candidates must get the application and submit it in person at the office of the Clerk of the Board, which is located at the County Administration Building at 1600 Pacific Highway, Room 402. The attached Board of Supervisors agenda item and notice outline the specific requirements for the position.

It is anticipated that the Board will hear from and review the qualifications of all of the applicants at a hearing on February 24, and then select no more than five finalists. On March 3, the Board will hold another hearing to review the finalists and make their selection.

The Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk handles a variety of responsibilities, including the maintenance of property ownership, assessment and sales records, issuing birth and death certificates and performing civil marriage ceremonies.
